What Is Asthma and When Should You Worry About It?
There are a lot of people who don’t know much about asthma symptoms and I think it is very important to say a few words about it and I will tell you exactly why I feel this way. Maybe you just suffer from a small flu, so, in this case, do you need a vacuum more sophisticated for real? Should you pay more for a product just because it sounds great? My personal opinion is no.
But if you do have asthma, then you must do your house cleaning most professionally and invest in, might I say, hospital-grade vacuum cleaners.
According to medical dictionaries, Asthma is a disease in which the airways are narrowed and expanded in such a way that they produce more mucus than they normally would. Because of this breathing is more difficult, triggering coughing and shortness of inhalation.
Unfortunately, asthma can’t be healed, but the symptoms can be controlled. In this kind of disease, keeping the symptoms in control is vital for the quality of life.
So, if you have periodically shortness of breath, chest pains, you are coughing or wheezing, it is not only time to schedule a visit to the doctor but also to upgrade your cleaning appliances. You can start by checking HEPA vacuums for sale and move from there until you find the most suitable one for you.
What Makes a Hypoallergenic Vacuum Cleaner to be Different?
It is not news if I say that pet hair is not very helpful if you have any sort of breathing allergies, but furry friends are such a joy in our lives, so it would be a pity not to be able to have such a companion. Luckily, today there are so many best vacuum for allergies and pet hair options that allow you to have a normal life even in such conditions.
I can say, and probably everyone can agree, that the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair are hypoallergenic ones because they have filters created in such a way that they can retain more than 99% of particles that they absorb.
This characteristic can’t be found in normal vacuum cleaners, meaning that a regular vac will not be capable of retaining very fine dust, and therefore many of the allergens which are simply too small for their capabilities.
The most performant filter you can find today is known as “HEPA” and I am sure this is not the first time you hear about this term. But what does HEPA mean? Well, the term stands for ‘High-Efficiency Particulate Air‘ and is applied to filters that can catch 99.97% of 0.3 microns particles.
This means that even basic EN 1822 certified HEPA vacuum cleaners will increase the quality of life. However, today there are very modern hypoallergenic vacuums that use a system based on four primary components:
- The closing output filter, which is usually a HEPA one;
- The motor with a fan or an impeller assembly;
- A secondary particle filter that is used to protect the motor assembly;
- The primary filter is a bag, a cup, or a wet filter bucket, depending on the vacuum cleaner model.
So, let’s not linger any more on this aspect and move on to the next point of the article.

I am a fan of anything gadgety, so it was impossible for me not to add a robot to this list.

10. Dyson Ball Allergy Complete Bagless Vacuum Cleaner

It is almost impossible to be a grown-up looking for a vacuum cleaner and not hear about the famous Dyson Cinetic big ball animal plus allergy remover. I will admit that its popularity is well deserved because not only this is a very powerful and effective vacuum cleaner, but it is also very complex.
It is my personal belief that one of the ugliest parts of cleaning the house is not the vacuuming itself, but the process of emptying the dirt bin. Actually, this is an aspect in which Dyson Upright Ball excels.
But let me start from the beginning and tell you that this model has a very good suction power (250 AW) that will let you take out all the dust from your floor. Also, it is slightly flexible, so maneuvering it will be easy.

Buying Guide for the best HEPA Shop Vacuum Experience
Knowing which are the best vacuum cleaner for allergies products is not enough to make the correct decision. You need more factors to take into consideration that knowing some characteristics. This is why I have created this next buying guide. So, let’s start and see how to pick the best model for your needs.
Vacuum Type
When deciding on the next vacuum purchase, the first aspect you need to think about is the type of vac you want. As you could have already seen, these vacuum cleaners come in any kind of size and shape.
You can choose a stick, a canister or an upright one depending on your preferences. I will take each model at a time, to remind you of the differences between types.
So, if you intend to pick a canister vacuum cleaner, you should know that these models are more lightweight and also quieter than upright models. Also, since they are corded, they have more power than sticks, therefore they are more effective.
If your house has delicate floors and you are not a fan of heavy appliances, then you should definitely pick a canister model. However, they also have some minuses, such as requiring a bending position when using them.
Therefore, if you have a problem with your back, you should check out upright or stick vacuum cleaners. Of course, sticks are only used when surface cleaning is needed. For more in-depth vacuuming, you will need an upright model that is powerful and versatile.
Bagged or Bagless
After deciding on the type of vacuum cleaner you would like to use, it is time to balance another very important aspect – how do you wish to deposit the debris? In the end, there are 2 big categories for each type of vacuum cleaner. So, is it going to be a bagged or a bagless vac? Let’s take each one and see what characteristics they have.
The first category contains the bagged ones. And just as their name implies, the bagged vacuum cleaners have a bag to store the dirt. These bags have a sealing mechanism that will keep them tightly shut while functioning. This means that they will only let the dirt enter. The bag needs to be removed and replaced when full.
These models will not let the user get in contact with any dust particle when replacing the bag. This is a great advantage for people suffering from allergies.
It’s true, their minus is that you will need to invest periodically into bags, but it will pay, considering health is in the very first place.
On the other hand, bagless vacuums have started becoming more and more popular worldwide. Even if they are theoretically very easy to clean, as you just throw away the dirt from the dust cup, for your allergies, this process might cause a lot of harm.
As the topic today is the best vacuums for allergies, I recommend you the bagged ones. You will just throw away the bag, without making contact with any particle of dust, bacteria, or other residues.
This takes the discussion to another aspect you need to consider when choosing a vac.
Filtration Capacity
This is another very important, if not the most important, aspect to consider when purchasing a hypoallergenic vacuum cleaner.
As you can imagine, technology today allows you to choose from multiple filtration options. These alternatives include effective filters such as air-purifying or even water filters. However, the most used filtration, which is also the most reliable one is HEPA.
As discussed at the beginning of this article, HEPA filters retain more than 99% of very thin particles. Even though most allergens will fall in this size classification, not every vacuum cleaner comes packed with a HEPA filter, so if you suffer from very dangerous allergies, be sure to buy a model equipped with this kind of filter.
However, if you don’t need a very great level of filtration, then maybe you should pick a cheaper version.
FAQs
If you still have questions about the best vacuum cleaner for allergies here are the most frequently asked ones.
My Top Pick
As you can see, there are many vacuum cleaner models from which you can choose if you suffer from allergies. The secret here is to pick the right one for you and your needs and you will see how easy life will become.
My top pick on the day is Kenmore Elite 31150 Bagged Vacuum Cleaner. The reason I prefer this device is because it has a very powerful suction, great filters and is also a bagged model.
Now, tell me. Do you have a favorite brand or why not one that you felt disappointed with? Use the comment section below and let me know all the details. I would love to change my opinions regarding the topic.
I don’t agree that canister or bagless vacuums should be used by asthmatics or people with allergies. While the filter is great and all, emptying the canister is dangerous – everything in there comes flying into your face and eyes.
Wish bagged upright vacuums were more popular – the cost of bags is minimal versus the suffering of allergies and asthma.
Dear Andrea,
First of all thanks for your comment.
I know for a fact that HEPA filters make life easier for people suffering from allergies. This being said, even if you have to clean the filters, the allergens will remain trapped and you should not have problems with this aspect.
Of course, if you feel better after using a bagged model than you should keep doing so. Every person is different and we should do what is best for us.
What I can recommend you is to check out the asthma and allergy certifications and see if the model you want is recommended or not.

Please let me know if I can be of any other help.
Kind regards,
Kevin
Andrea, as an asthma & allergy sufferer, I couldn’t agree with you more! Even though my sweeper has filters, I’m affected most after vacuuming while dumping the canister, & touching debris while cleaning out the inside of the machine & filters…both need a lot of attention. It’s my opinion bagless vacuums, filters or not, are not well designed, especially for people like me. 😊
