When it comes to dust and debris, nobody is a fan. However, people with allergies or asthma have a much bigger problem with them.
Unfortunately, the process of vacuuming, if done with the wrong vacuum cleaner, will release back all the allergens. This will not only not solve any problems but can, in fact, make the allergy worse.
This is why the best vacuum cleaners come with HEPA filters that will not allow allergens to return to the air.
So, I recommend that you keep reading to find out not only all there is to know about this subject but also the 11 best HEPA filter vacuum cleaners available on the market in 2020.

Top 11 Best HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaners - the Full Reviews
I hope that, by this time, you have already formulated an opinion of what you want. So all that is left now is to read the full reviews and really understand what each model can and cannot offer you. Let’s begin!
1. Soniclean Upright Vacuum Cleaner
I must confess that what first caught my eyes regarding the Soniclean vacuum cleaner was its design. Until seeing it, I have never imagined a more beautifully designed vacuum cleaner.
However, the fact that it looks like a piece of artwork it's not its only quality. It is very easy to maneuver and it treats your carpet in a very careful way. Actually, a lot of popular carpet brands such as Mohawk SmartStrand or Karastan support the use of this vacuum cleaner.
It has a patented sonic cleaning technology that produces 200 vibrations/second.
Due to its very lightweight and its large front wheels, it glides very easy. It has a very long cord - 35 meters. This means that you won't have problems cleaning multiple rooms with just an outlet. Speaking of power, his vacuum cleaner will consume 50% less electricity than other models.
- Very beautiful;
- Great for carpets;
- Very silent.
- It doesn’t come with accessories;
- It can be considered expensive.
I am absolutely in love with the Soniclean vacuum cleaner and I am not the only one because it even received an award from The Carpet & Rug Institute.
The characteristic that I am most impressed with is its multi-speed motor that can be digitally controlled. You can use its quiet mode for normal hard floors and rugs or the deep cleaning mode for the areas that need deep cleaning.
I could speak about this model for hours, but I will leave you to find out for yourself what other characteristics the Soniclean vacuum cleaner has. You can start by watching the next video:
2. Shark APEX AZ1002
My next favorite HEPA vacuum cleaner is the Shark APEX AZ1002. It is an upright model that has the Shark DuoClean technology. This means that it comes with dual brush rolls that will provide a deep cleaning to your carpets and will offer a polished look to the hardwood floors.
For a better reach such as under the furniture or upholstery places, the canister can be detached.
Last, but not least, it has a self-cleaning brush roll that will assist you in the hair removal process.
- Great suction;
- Self-cleaning brush;
- Multi-surface cleaning.
- It can be considered expensive.
I think that it is very hard not to like the Shark APEX AZ1002. Not only that it is very easy to use and of course it has the HEPA filters, but it also comes with lots of accessories such as the pet power brush or the upholstery tool.
It is not very cheap, but I think that its self-cleaning brush and the possibility of multi-surface cleaning are advantages that are worth to be taken into consideration.
3. Hoover T-Series WindTunnel
If you want a vacuum cleaner that has HEPA filters, but you are on a budget, you should consider buying the Hoover UH70120 model.
Not only that it comes at an incredible price, but it also has amazing features such as the Windtunnel Technology. This means that it creates a powerful suction that lifts and removes the debris from both the surface and the more in-depth parts.
Just as all HEPA filters, the ones used by the Hoover UH70120 vacuum cleaner also contains more than 99% of the dirt and allergens.
To ensure a multi-surface cleaning, this model comes with 5 height adjustments. This means that you can use it for hard floors, tiles, fluffy carpets or thin rugs.
- Amazing price;
- Can be used for any kind of surface;
- Powerful suction.
- Not the best for pet hair.
I won't say that the Hoover UH70120 is the best vacuum cleaner that I ever had because then I would be lying. However, I do think that it is the best one with HEPA filters that comes at such a low budget.
So, if you don't expect to receive premium features, you will most probably love this mode.
To understand how to assemble this vacuum cleaner, I suggest you watch the following video:
4. iRobot Roomba 761
(Best HEPA Robot)
If you want a smart HEPA filter vacuum cleaner, you should look into the iRobot Roomba 761.
It has a patented system with 3 cleaning stages and also a dual brush for multi surfaces. These two features will ensure that all small and large dust and debris particles will be picked up.
You just have to push the button "CLEAN" and this little guy will know what to do. This is possible due to its Dirt Detector sensors that will know exactly what are the parts of your house that have the most traffic and therefore are in need of the most cleaning.
Lastly, it has an auto-adjustable head that will adapt its height depending on the surface that needs to be vacuumed.
- Smart vacuum cleaner;
- Good price for a robot;
- Multi-surface cleaning.
- Not the best for small under the furniture spaces.
Having a robot vacuum cleaner is always a very helpful thing. Having one with HEPA filters is over the top.
Just like all the products from Roomba, the iRobot Roomba 761 does an amazing job and it will ease your cleaning time in half. However, I think that it works best in open spaces than in a house with many rooms.

5. Dyson Upright Ball Multi Floor 2
(Best Bin Emptying System)
I think that one of the nasties parts of the vacuum cleaning is actually the part in which you have to empty the dirt bin. If you feel the same way as me, I recommend you to read carefully this next review.
This Dyson Upright Ball Multi Floor 2, not only does it have a very great suction power (250 AW) and is lightly manageable, but it also has one of the best bin emptying systems. All you have to do is to press a button. The dust will go away, without you touching anything.
Due to its large cord (31 feet) and also its want, you can reach up to 40 feet, giving you the possibility to clean above and under your furniture.
The last thing I want to mention about this vacuum cleaner is its radial root cyclone technology that will help you to capture microscopic particles better than most of its competitors.
- Great bin emptying system;
- Captures very thin particles;
- It has a very big reach.
- Not the best for carpets.
If you want an upright vacuum cleaner that works great for hard floors, captures incredible thing particles and has an impressive reach then there is no better one than the Dyson Upright Ball Multi Floor 2.
However, if you want this model especially for rug or carpets then you should consider twice.

6. Miele Complete C3 Calima
There are a lot of people who prefer canister vacuum cleaners better than the upright models and I think that you should know that there are also canister models that include HEPA filters.
For example, the best one I was able to test is the Miele's Complete C3 Calima. This model comes with a turbo brush and an air-driven spinning roller brush that releases the dirt on the floor.
Due to this feature, it works amazingly on low-medium height carpets but also on all smooth flooring. Also, for the hard surfaces, this model comes with a parquet twister that provides a 180° rotation.
Depending on the surface you are vacuuming, you can pick from one of the 6 speeds that are available.
- Great for smooth surfaces;
- Has 6 speeds;
- It comes with an upholstery tool.
- Not the best for pet hair;
- It is expensive.
I think that all Miele products are premium ones. However, even though they are not very affordable, they return great results.
So, just as all the other vacuum cleaners provided by this brand, the Miele's Complete C3 Calima is also an amazing one, therefore there aren't many things to say about it, but I will tell you this.
I love how easy it change its speeds with the help of its foot-switch. For a short video presentation, just watch click on the link below:
7. Dyson Cyclone V10 Motorhead
If you think that only corded models come with HEPA filters, think again. So, if you want better portability and a cordless vacuum cleaner that also has the best filtration possible, you should check out the Dyson Cyclone V10.
This stick model can run up to 60 minutes when you use one of its non-motorized tools and up to 20 minutes in suction mode II. Also, it needs 3.5 hours to charge.
This probably doesn't need to be mentioned, but I will say it nevertheless. This model is a very lightweight one, so you won't have any issue to maneuver it.
It has stiff nylon bristles that are driven into carpets to help capture the deep-down dirt.
Last, but not least, you can convert it into a handheld vacuum cleaner and use it on very hard to reach edges or why not your car.
- 2-in-1 vacuum cleaner;
- Very portable.
- It doesn’t have the best battery.
I think that every person should have a stick vacuum cleaner in the house. If it's also convertible into a handheld one even better. And if it has HEPA filters, I don't have to say more.
This is why this model from Dyson is on my list. Yes, you can find sticks with better batteries and at better prices, but then you will sacrifice the filters.
O won't say other things about it, because in the end, each person chooses the features best for its needs. However, if you are interested in this model and want to see how to clean it, I recommend you to watch the next video:
8. Kenmore Elite 31150
(Best for Pet Hair)
Just as in almost all the articles, I offer a solution for people with pets. When it comes to vacuum cleaners that have HEPA filters, the best one for pet hair that I had the honor to test is the Kenmore Elite 31150.
This model is suited for any surface you might think of. This also includes the outsides of your house and not only its interiors.
For a better hair removal, it comes with an air-driven turbine that spins the roller brush. This will help you to easily remove stubborn pet hair from your carpets, car seats or couch.
Not only that the Kenmore Elite 31150 has HEPA filters, but it actually has a triple HEPA filter system that is AAFA certified.
Due to its 3D inducer motor that combines the power of 3 motors, it offers a very powerful suction that is never lost.
- It has a beltless agitator that reduces maintenance;
- Very good suction;
- Triple HEPA filter system;
- Amazing for pet hair.
- Not very lightweight;
- It is kind of noisy.
For a person living with a long-haired dog, I find it very important to have a vacuum cleaner that helps me keep the house cleaned.
I must confess that I was more impressed with the Kenmore Elite 31150 that I first thought.
In my opinion, this model only has advantages. Of course, I had to find something bad to say about, but other than its weight there is nothing that would make me think twice before buying it.
You can see more details about it if watching the video below:
9. Miele Complete C3 with SEB236 Powerhead Bundle
If you can afford a premium vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters then the model you are looking for is the Miele Complete C3 with SEB236 Powerhead Bundle.
This bundle includes:
- The Miele's AH50 GN Performance Pack;
- 6 Genuine Miele FilterBags;
- One Genuine Miele HEPA Filter AH-50;
- Four Pre-Motor Protection Filters.
This model is a very powerful but also quiet one. Thankfully, this combo is possible due to its 1200W vortex motor.
This model is recommended more than others for people suffering from asthma or respiratory allergies. Not only that it comes with HEPA filters, but it also has a special feature called 'AirClean Sealed System Construction'.
With the help of the SEB-236 Powerhead, you can get real deep cleaning done to your carpets, while the SBB300-3 Parquet Floor Brush will help you to perfectly clean under the low furniture.
- Very premium features;
- Great for people with asthma or respiratory allergies;
- It comes with a great bundle.
- Very expensive.
I think that people that can afford to buy this model should not think twice. It returns incredible results, it is very lightweight and easy to use.
If it wasn't for the price, this would be flawless. For more details about it, you can check the following video:
10. Makita XCV11Z 18V
Portability is a very important factor, for me at least. Because of this, I couldn't let this presentation finish without adding a very portable model with HEPA filters.
After testing many models, I concluded that the best one is the Makita XCV11Z. This model has a powerful BL Brushless that works with the help of an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery.
It has a filter cleaning system that will help you to get the best suction and also a longer life for the filter.
Its run time is up to 60 minutes. This means plenty of time for you to clean a full apartment.
- Very portable;
- Powerful suction.
- Its hose could have been longer.
I think that this is an amazing model, especially if you have to clean your car or garage. It is lightweight and to increase its portability it even has an integrated tethering hook. Also, you can choose an optional shoulder strap.
I would have loved to see a longer hose, but other than that I can't say any bad things about this model.
Check out the next presentation for more info:
11. Aerus Vacuum Cleaner
(Best Innovative Technology)
The vacuum cleaner produced by Aerus is a very sophisticated canister vacuum cleaner that stands out for multiple reasons. However, the most important factor that I want to mention is that it actually has not one but 2 HEPA filters.
It has an Automatic Operation Mode that will sense what type of cleaning you are doing, but also an alert system that will alert you when maintenance is required.
Another great advantage of this model is its quietness. You can use it without worrying about waking about a sleeping baby or upsetting the neighbors.
- 2 HEPA filters;
- Automatic Operation Mode;
- Not noisy;
- 360° rotating hose;
- Ergonomic design.
I must confess that I didn’t expect that this vacuum cleaner would impress me this much. However, it is the perfect mix between a smart robot vacuum cleaner and a conventional one. Yes, it doesn’t come cheap, but since it is an innovative model, I suggest to consider it.
What are HEPA Filters and How do They Work?
You've probably heard many times before the term "HEPA", you know that it stands for a filter system that is good for your health, but you don't actually know what it means. So it's time for you to find out more.
HEPA means 'High-Efficiency Particulate Air' and is a label applied to filters that can trap 99.97% of 0.3 microns particles.
Even though the HEPA test and certification process was first established in 1983, the development of HEPA filters first started in World War II.
During the Manhattan Project, the US created the first HEPA filter that was intended to capture radioactive scraps released while creating the atomic bomb.
The 0.3-micron size is referred to as the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Experts found out that these kinds of particles escape air filters.
Now, modern HEPA filters are made of interlaced glass threads that are bent and twisted in multiple directions to produce a threadlike maze. As particles cross this web, they are taken out of circulation in multiple ways so let's take each one at a time to understand the process.
- Sieving. The airstream carries a particle between the two fibers, Because the particle is bigger than the gap, it is trapped.
- Direct Impaction. Big contaminants, like some dust types, mold or pollen, move in a direct trail, hit a fiber and, in the end, clinging to it.
- Diffusion. Tiny, ultrafine particles travel more unevenly than bigger ones. This means that they are more inclined to hit and cling to fibers.
- Interception. Airflow is sufficiently nimble to find a different route around fibers. However, due to inertia, particles remain on their track and adhere to the fibers' sides.
Are all HEPA filters identical?
You probably guessed the answer to this, but no, not all HEPA filters have the same properties. When looking at multiple filters you will see important differences in both composition and utilization.
Some use an ionizer that is the first barrier that meets the air that gives a negative electrostatic charge to the incoming particles and then captures them.
Others work in a different way and simply reduce the contaminants, therefore prevent allergen development and the additional growth of bacteria or viruses on the filter.
The good thing about HEPA technology is that regardless of its method of purifying the air, you know precisely what to expect.
How to Be Sure That Your Hepa Is Not Just Fake Advertising
Just as in all domains, there will be a lot of scammers that will want to sell you fake HEPA filters. Therefore you will need to know how to recognize a true one.
The first thing you need to do is to check if the filter has a serial number printed on it. If it doesn't have one, then it is definitely a false filter.
Also, it is very important to clarify this. A HEPA vacuum is produced for an appropriate HEPA performance and can be both a bagged or bagless model.
This means that it is not the bag type that makes a vacuum HEPA or not. Furthermore, using a HEPA vacuum bag or a HEPA filter in your a non-HEPA vacuum cleaner will not convert it into a HEPA model, therefore you won't get the wanted outcomes.
HEPA vacuum cleaners are sealed and also have specialized filters that clean all of the air that goes out of the vacuum, while standard ones normally filter the air through the vacuum bag.
Buying Guide - How to Choose the Best HEPA Filter Vacuum Cleaner
Now that you know all the important aspects related to the HEPA filters and also have seen what are the best models of HEPA vacuum cleaners available on the market in 2020, it is time to make a decision and pick the very best product for you and your needs.
But how can you do that? You need to put down on paper the points that are the most relevant to you. If you don't know how to do it, follow the buyer's guide below where I will teach you how to pick the ultimate vacuum cleaner for your house.
Vacuum Cleaner Type
As you could already see HEPA filters are available on all types of vacuum cleaners so let's make a recap.
Upright vacuum cleaners are probably the most common ones when talking about devices that come with HEPA filter. They work great for carpets that need deep cleaning and have a good reach under the furniture.
Not all upright vacuum cleaners are made the same. Some are more powerful than others because they have a dual motor. So if you want an upright vacuum cleaner, be sure that you pick the right one for your needs. Do you want it for heavy vacuuming or for everyday cleaning?
The next very popular model is the canister one. They are more compact and easy to use for stair areas and upholstery. They usually are more lightweight than the upright models even though they tend to be more powerful and offer more suction.
However, in the end, is just a matter of taste.
Commercial vacuum cleaners can be both upright and canister models, but what makes them special is their very high power and suction.
They are heavier and less easy to use, but they are designed for heavy-duty jobs, therefore are not for everyday use. Except for the cases in you use one as an everyday job.
Now, it is actually very easy to buy a robotic vacuum cleaner, therefore you can find a HEPA one just as easily. So if you want a device that will do most of the cleaning for you, then you should consider buying a smart vacuum cleaner.
Keep in mind that a robot will only do the everyday cleaning for you and the heavy vacuuming will still be part of your routine.
Sticks and Handhelds Models
These are the most lightweight and smallest types of vacuum cleaners that you can buy. Most of the time they come cordless and in 2-in-1 models.
They are great for upholstery and hard-to-reach areas but keep in mind that they are for everyday cleaning.
Bagged or Bagless Models
Just as in the case of upright versus canister, choosing between a bagged and a bagless model is also in the and a thing of personal taste.
Both kinds of models have pluses and minuses, such as extra power when it comes to the bagged ones and more environmentally friendly features when it comes to the bagless one.
Since you can find both versions when searching for HEPA vacuum cleaners, you won't have a hard time to satisfy your needs.
I think that weight is a very important factor when picking up a vacuum cleaner. Of course, usually, the most lightweight ones tend to be less powerful.
However, you can find models that are not heavy and offer powerful suction.
All vacuum cleaners make noise, but some more than others. So, if you live in a small apartment or have a baby that needs to sleep while you clean, you will want a silent version.
This means that you should look for models that are in the 60-65 dB range.
As a piece of advice, look into the canister models because they tend to be less noisy than the upright ones.
If you have a pet friend living with you, you should buy a vacuum cleaner that has the capacity to remove its hair from your carpets. There are actually specialized models for this purpose, so you should start from there.
If you can't decide on a model that is recommended for pet hair, you should pick a vacuum cleaner that has a power of at least 12 Amps.
Speaking of power, depending on your cleaning needs you should pick a model that has the right amount of power.
Keep in mind that the more powerful the vacuum cleaner is, the more electricity it requires, hence the bigger the bills.
So if you live in a clean area with little traffic, you should not invest in a very powerful model. However, if you live in a flat near a very trafficked road, you will most likely need a vacuum cleaner with great suction.
I know that this sounds silly, but we all tend to be biased and have preferences. So if you have a favorite brand such as Shark, Eureka, Miele or Bissel, check them first to see if they have HEPA filter models and start reading their specifications to see if either of them fits your needs.
I hope that after reading this article you understand more about the HEPA filters, how they work and why they are recommended to have. Also, I hope that I was able to make your buying decision easier and you are not more stuck than you were before.
